Graduation Day Guide for Parents

Here it comes, the big day you've been waiting for...

Senior year has been all about celebrating your graduate. It is such an exciting time! But now it is probably dawning on you that they are soon moving on... It is a mix of emotions. Right about now, maybe you are feeling frazzled and overwhelmed.

Here are some top tips on how to prepare for Graduation Day, and beyond...

Hold on tightly, Let go lightly

The Grad Party

* Pick your party date well in advance. Bear in mind, the weekend of graduation is nuts. You may want to celebrate the weekend before just so your child won't want to go to two other parties on the same day!

* Decide on a color scheme & get your napkins/plates etc now

* Google 'Grad Party Ideas' and see what makes you giggle - cupcake toppers, fun balloons etc. Order them now.

* Start Writing ideas for a speech you might want to give, or a special card you might want to write. Remember different moments through their life.

* Spend some time looking through old photos. If you feel overwhelmed, pick 5 memorable family vacations and just look at those. Keep a list on your phone of pictures you remember loving and try to find them when you can.

Lunch Date

Take your senior out for lunch one day, for no apparent reason.

Do it soon.

This is sweet because it gives you a moment together without all the scheduling decisions or questions about the future.

Just go have lunch somewhere easy, that your senior really likes.

And enjoy a simple lunch together. Try not to talk about big decisions. Talk about their friends, about fun ideas for the summer. Nothing more.

Enjoy it.

Graduation Day

Prepare for an intense day. No matter how chill you are, it is a very moving experience watching all these amazing kids graduate. Not just your own, but all your friends' kids too. Many, you will have known their entire lives.

Arrive early, dress in layers and be present.

To bring:

Suncream, tissues, gum, water, extra layer of clothing, cushion to sit on, gimmick of your senior's face? big head on a stick or tshirt with baby photo? balloons? cake? lei? Camera!
